Armenia rejects Azerbaijan’s demand to change legislation

PanARMENIAN.Net - The legislation of the Republic of Armenia is a domestic affair of Armenia, and no foreign power has the right to interfere in the internal affairs of our country, press secretary of the Armenian Prime Minister Nazeli Baghdasaryan said Wednesday, February 14.

Baghdasaryan comments came after president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said that there will be no peace treaty unless Armenia brings its legislation into order.

Weighing in on Aliyev’s accusation of territorial claims, Baghdasaryan said Armenia adheres to the agreements reached with Azerbaijan on international platforms to recognize each other's territorial integrity on the basis of the Alma-Ata declaration, to carry out border demarcation works between the two countries on the basis of the Alma-Ata declaration, to open regional communications on the basis the sovereignty, jurisdiction, equality and on opening based on the principles of reciprocity.

“Azerbaijan regularly violates these agreements by its aggressive rhetoric, use of force and threat of force, which also contradicts written agreements reached on international platforms,” the spokesperson said.

“At the same time, Azerbaijan continues to keep the vital territories of 31 villages of the Republic of Armenia under occupation.”

According to her, such behavior shows that Azerbaijan continues the strategy of deepening hostility in the region, which is a continuous threat of destabilization.

“Armenia will continue its efforts to establish peace, and again offers Azerbaijan the withdrawal of troops from the 1991 border, which will be a cornerstone step for stability and mutual trust in the region,” Baghdasaryan said.

“As for the peace treaty, there is an already agreed clause in the draft negotiated between Armenia and Azerbaijan, according to which the parties cannot refer to their legislation to refuse to fulfill any provision of the peace treaty.”
