NAGORNO KARABAKH FOREIGN MINISTER HELD NEGOTIATIONS WITH US CONGRESS REPRESENTATIVES IN WASHINGTONJune 12, 2002 - 23:03 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - In the course of the continuing visit to Washington Nagorno Karabakh Republic Foreign Minister Naira Melkumian had a number of meetings with representatives of the US Congress. In particular, she met with Chairman of the Senator committee on armed forces Carl Levin, Deputy chairman of the Senate sub-committee on foreign operations Mitch McConnell and member of committee on foreign relations Lincoln Chafee. In the course of the conversations the prospects of the Karabakh conflict peaceful settlement as well as questions connected with US providing humanitarian aid to Karabakh and waiver of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act were discussed. The Senators assured that they would keep the process of US administration giving military aid to Azerbaijan under strict control. They also stressed that they would continue making efforts to protect the interests of Nagorno Karabakh in the future, too. Naira Melkumian also met with leaders of the Armenian lobbyist structures - the Armenian Assembly of America and the Armenian National Committee. A reception was given in honor of the NKR Foreign Minister in the Armenian Embassy in Washington with representatives of the Armenian community participating.
