The IDF described Shadmani as one of the closest military figures to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran’s military leadership. Prior to his appointment as headquarters chief, he served as deputy commander of the joint Khatam al‑Anbiya military command and oversaw operations at the General Staff, responsible for coordinating combat operations and strategic decisions. Following the launch of Israel’s “Rising Lion” operation on June 13, he was appointed to succeed Gholam‑Ali Rashid, who had been killed by an Israeli strike. On the same day, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, formerly in that post, was also killed. Israel’s June 13 operation targeted Iran’s nuclear sites, military bases and infrastructure, killing more than ten senior officers and nuclear scientists. In response, Iran launched “True Promise 3”.
