Armenia pledges action-focused COP17

PanARMENIAN.Net - Environment Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan presented Armenia's priorities as the host country of COP17 during high-level discussions held as part of L ondon Climate Action Week.

He said Armenia is ready to make COP17 a conference focused on practical outcomes and concrete action by bringing together international partners around a shared commitment to act for nature.

Speaking at the high-level events Finance and Nature Dialogue and The Road to COP17 Yerevan, Matevosyan outlined Armenia's vision as the host country and incoming presidency of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity.

Matevosyan noted that the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework has established clear objectives, but their implementation will only be possible if political commitments are translated into practical measures and real investments.

He stressed that financing nature conservation is one of the defining challenges of our time. While public funding plays a vital role, it is insufficient to close the biodiversity financing gap. According to the minister, greater private investment is needed, along with reliable data and accountability systems, stronger investor confidence, and the creation of credible, viable portfolios of nature-positive projects.

Matevosyan also underscored the importance of deepening cooperation among governments, financial institutions, international organizations, technology companies, the private sector, local communities and civil society. He emphasized that only joint efforts can ensure the achievement of global biodiversity goals.

The events served as important platforms for discussing the policy and financial solutions needed to accelerate investment in nature conservation and build strong partnerships ahead of COP17, which will be held in Yerevan.
