Yerevan plans park-and-ride facilities

PanARMENIAN.Net - Large parking facilities will be created near the entrances to Yerevan, where drivers will be able to leave their private vehicles and continue their journeys by public transport, Mayor Tigran Avinyan said during a municipal planning meeting.

According to Avinyan, residents often complain that dedicated bus lanes on certain streets have made it more difficult to travel by private car. However, he said the situation has a straightforward explanation because Yerevan's streets cannot be widened, Aysor.am reported.

"Yerevan's streets, especially those in the city center, have no room to expand. If the number of passenger vehicles continues to grow month after month, the first and only step we must take is to introduce dedicated lanes for public transport wherever possible, making public transport routes faster and more convenient," the mayor said.

He added that there is no alternative solution for Yerevan. According to Avinyan, improving public transport and reducing the number of private vehicles entering the city's most congested areas is the only viable approach.

Earlier, Avinyan said the city's long-term strategy is to transition Yerevan entirely to electric public transport.
