Annual Spring Alive campaign launched in Armenia

On February 1, 2010, the Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds has launched the second Spring Alive Campaign of BirdLife International Partnership in Europe. Spring Alive invites children of all ages, their parents and teachers to marvel the return of some of the most fascinating migratory birds to Europe.

By attracting and uniting European children and their relatives in experiencing nature, Spring Alive aims at contributing to citizen science. Through the observations - which the children and/or their teachers communicate through the Spring Alive website - scientists hope to see whether these four bird species arrive earlier in Europe than previously, thus indicating an increase in temperature in European countries. That way, Spring Alive could contribute to raising awareness for climate change amongst Europe’s youth.

Four common European bird species (also common in Armenia), the Cuckoo, the Common Swift, the Barn Swallow and the White Stork were chosen as spring messengers for the Spring Alive Project. Through the Spring Alive website, children from all over Europe are asked to communicate their first sightings of these species.

Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds (ASPB) is a non-governmental organization which strives to conserve birds, habitats upon which they depend and areas of strategic importance to birds through active involvement of local communities using birds as important advocacy tool. It was established to ensure wise stewardship of birds naturally occurring in the Armenian territory.

ASPB aims to study, protect and maintain the viable populations of birds, especially those threatened and vulnerable classified globally and at national level, and areas of strategic importance to birds as a valuable natural resource. It is committed to use birds as an important advocacy medium to leverage the environmental interest and concern.
