Opposition Heritage party leader Raffi Hovannisian goes on hunger strikeMarch 15, 2011 - 16:21 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - During an extraordinary congress of Heritage party, leader of the opposition party Raffi Hovannisian demanded from Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan that he resign his post and ensure organization of fair and independent elections. Besides, Hovannisian said he launches a hunger strike, calling it “a hunger strike for the sake of freedom.” According to him, the country is in a critical situation and needs decisive steps to tackle the existing problems. After that Hovannisian told the congress participants that now he wants to shut himself with his family members and promised that soon they will meet to discuss the further actions. Head of Heritage parliamentary group Stepan Safaryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter that Hovannisian’s statement was unexpected for the party members. Safaryan said they were unaware of Hovannisian’s intention to launch a hunger strike. According to him, now the party leadership is going to define further steps.
