Baku’s idea on ‘intermediate status’ for independent Artsakh contradicts to international law

PanARMENIAN.Net - “Who entitled Baku leadership to interfere in inferior of independent countries and offer an ‘intermediate status’ to neighboring states?” according to Adviser to the NKR Foreign Minister Ruben Zargaryan.

“The idea of Baku on ‘intermediate status’ for independent Artsakh contradicts to international law, which records that the right of political status determination belongs to people, and no one else,” said Zargaryan commenting on head of public-political issues of Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration, Ali Gasanov’s proposals to grant Nagorno Karabakh an ‘intermediate status’. According to Gasanov, granting of the above mentioned status is a concession on the part of Baku.

“For Ali Gasanov, it would be more appropriate to offer an ‘intermediate status’ for Azerbaijan,” Zargaryan told Analitika.at.ua. in an interview.

The Adviser to the NKR Foreign Minister noted that attempt of Baku administration to dictate the so called ‘intermediate status’ to NKR is Azerbaijan’s strive to strikethrough the whole irreproachable international legal foundation for proclamation of NKR independence, its Constitution, legitimacy of elections, as well as international law, which qualifies Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state and imperatively dictates recognition of Nagorno Karabakh Republic’s independence.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
