YEREVAN IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE ACTIVATION OF MILITARY COOPERATION BETWEEN TURKEY AND ISRAEL

PanARMENIAN.Net - 29.08.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. For the past years Turkey has repeatedly addressed direct threats to Armenia, and naturally, the activation of Turkish-Israeli military cooperation can't but worry Armenia. An Armenian diplomat, who wished to remain unknown, informed MEDIAMAX about this, commenting upon the results of the visit of the Israeli PM Ehud Barak to Turkey.

According to the diplomat, Armenia has always spoken for the settlement of the regional conflicts through cooperation rather than opposition. "Turkey plans to spend billions of dollars on re-equipment of its Armed Forces in the near future, and its possible military alliance with Israel, from the viewpoint of upsetting the regional balance of power, may bring to undesired consequences for the whole region", said the Armenian diplomat.

In January 2000 during the unofficial visit of the Armenian president to Israel, in reply to the question of MEDIAMAX whether one can say that the military cooperation of Turkey and Israel and Azerbaijan's possible joining to this alliance have in some way caused the decision of the official Yerevan to regulate the contacts with Israel, Robert Kocharian said: "True, there is such anxiety. Considering the present Armenian-Turkish relations, naturally we don't want the military cooperation of Turkey and Israel take over an anti-Armenian direction. With the unsettled Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan's joining to this military alliance can have certain consequences. We must be predictable for each other, and the development of relations with Israel is also aimed to dispel such misgivings". -0-
