150 PEOPLE REFUSING TO DO MILITARY SERVICE CONVICTED IN ARMENIA WITHIN LAST THREE YEARS

PanARMENIAN.Net - 150 people being mostly the members of "Yehova witnesses" not registered religious organization were convicted for refusing to do military service in Armenia within the last three years. Helsinki Committee of Armenia Avetik Ishkhanian stated at the conference devoted to the issues of introduction of alternative military service in the country. In the advocate's opinion, pacifist ideas are not widely spread in Armenia, so it is difficult to agree with the military men, who affirm that the majority of young people will avoid fulfilling military obligations if alternative service is introduced into the system. To note, the adoption of law "On alternative service" is one of Armenia's obligations to the Council of Europe.
