Energy Ministry considers extension of Metsamor NPP operation term

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources plans to assess chances of extending terms of Metsamor nuclear power plant operation, RA Energy Minister said.

According to Armen Movsisyan, significant works were carried out in 2011 on boosting its safety level, with an action plan to be drawn up to further pursue activity in the field.

“We will try to extend the Armenian NPP operation term by 10 years due to the works carried out and introduction of necessary investments before construction of the new power plant,” Minister Movsisyan said.

He further noted 2019-2020 as possible years for launch of the new power plant operation, with agreements reached on financing the construction project up to 50% during Rosatom corporation director Sergei Kiriyenko’s recent visit to Armenia.

In this context, Energy Minister added that Russian side suggests Armenia itself seek rest of the means instead of attracting investors.
