ARMENIA ONE OF LEADERS IN CAMPAIGN FOR MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia is one of the leading countries in terms of its campaign to promote the Millennium Development Goals, said Lise Grande, UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia. With respect to the overarching Millennium Goal of eradication of extreme poverty and hunger by 2015, she noted that due to the economic growth observed in Armenia within the past six years, the poverty level has dropped from 55% to 50%. The main issues facing the country include poverty reduction, preservation of the environment and other social problems. It should be reminded that the Millennium Development Goals were agreed upon at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, where Armenia together with other 190 UN member-states approved of a number of priorities of world development until 2015. These Goals are: eradication of poverty and hunger, achievement of universal primary education, expansion of women's rights and gender equality, improvement of maternity health, reduction of child mortality, combating HIV/AIDS and malaria, ensuring environmental sustainability and global partnership for development.
