EDB rep. offers to take measures to extend Armenian NPP operationMarch 12, 2012 - 16:11 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Deputy Chairman of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) proposes immediate launch of the activities aimed at extension of the operation of Armenian nuclear power plant. “Otherwise, the plant will be forced to be closed down with no alternative left. This has already happened on several sites in Russia,” Dmitry Zhurba said on March 12 in Yerevan. Meanwhile, the EDB representative rendered the construction of the new power unit “weird”, noting investments in extension of resources of the existing plant much easier and more affordable. Armenia plans to construct a new 1000 MW power unit at the place of the existing NPP. RA Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources is due to estimate the capacities of extending the operation terms of the current Metsamor NPP. According to Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan, Armenia will extend the plant’s operation for 10 years at the expense of the investments prior to the construction of the new NPP.
