Azerbaijani society is gradually approaching the critical boiling point

With his latest statement the Azerbaijani President came close to Mikhail Saakashvili. The only difference is that in preserving his power Aliyev will be supported by Islamic countries, instead of the West.

November 29, 2008
Judging by the renewed bellicose statements of the Azerbaijani President, internal political situation in the country is far from the bright image that the clan of Aliyevs is presenting to the world. The great drop in prices of oil has already found a reflection in the Azeri press, which is «carefully» hinting that the world crisis has had its say also on Azerbaijan. The flow of petrodollars is already thinning into a narrow stream and, as a result, the poor society of Azerbaijan is finally slipping into a precipice. It is only Baku that is prospering, while the rest of Azerbaijan can see no bright spot in their hard lives.

The collapse of «colour revolutions» was inevitable

Administration of the leaving President of the USA put an end to the excessive ambitions of Mikhail Saakashvili, and what will Barack Obama do is still a question. Most likely he will handle the financial crisis.

The final nail into the grave of the Georgian «Rose Revolution» was driven by the statement of Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried. "NATO member-states recognize that Georgia and Ukraine have a lot of work to do to meet NATO's standards and requirements, and they acknowledge it themselves. They have different challenges. These are different countries. But they have a lot of work. There was never ever a discussion of actually extending to either Georgia or Ukraine an invitation to join NATO. This is, by all accounts, some time away, matter of years, and the Georgians and the Ukrainians acknowledge this," Fried said.

Does Armenia need normal relations with Turkey at the expense of historical memory loss?

If Ankara should declare tomorrow that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the problem of exclusively Armenia and Azerbaijan, it would be no surprise, even for Baku.

November 25, 2008
The latest visit of Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian to Istanbul aroused even more questions than the September meeting of Armenian, Turkish and Azerbaijani foreign ministers in New-York. During the visit foreign ministers of both countries made a number of sensational statements, the most shocking of which was the intention of Ankara to send her ambassador to Armenia without establishing diplomatic relations. If it were to happen anyway, it would be too difficult to even imagine what it is going to look like in practice.

Will Hillary Clinton be Secretary of State of the USA?

Armenian Diaspora in the USA reminds that Mrs. Clinton paid a visit to Turkey as a presidential candidate and there were rumors that some Turkish lobbying organizations sponsored her election campaign.

November 22, 2008
The New York Times is reporting that Hillary Clinton has accepted the position of Secretary of State in the Obama administration. This was confirmed to the Times by "two confidants" who insisted on remaining anonymous. According to the representatives of Clinton's office they are still in discussions on the matter and any reports beyond that are premature. However, according to unnamed Clinton and Obama confidants they have all the grounds to believe that President-elect Obama will make an announcement on Clinton's appointment, the AP reports.

Russia hurries to strengthen its position in the South Caucasus, trying to shift the regional center from Tbilisi to Yerevan

Armenia presently needs not promises of friendship and allied relations, but a more balanced policy in relations with the Russian Federation, which, however, should not presuppose secondary relations with the EU or the USA.

November 20, 2008
While the US Government is being formed, Russia hurries to strengthen its position in the South Caucasus, trying to shift the regional center from Tbilisi to Yerevan. Yet, it is still difficult to say what success Russia will achieve in the foreseeable future. But the growing statements on the principle of the right of a nation to self-determination, which Russian politicians of different ranks have been mentioning oftener and oftener in their statements, give grounds to believe that with Georgia retiring and Baku probably going «free sailing» Russia takes the risk of being left face to face with a very unreliable ally in the person of Turkey.

Vandalism and misappropriation of Armenian churches in Georgia goes on

It actually turns out that Georgian Government pampers Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) in their initiative to appropriate Armenian churches, believing that Armenians have nowhere to go. This position is dangerous and apparently leads to a deadlock.

November 18, 2008
On November 16 Georgia once more committed vandalism towards the long-suffering Church of Norashen in Tbilisi. This time for infamous priest of the Georgian Orthodox Church Father Tariel Sikinchelashvili as an object of barbarity served the graves of Mikhail and Lydia Tamamshevs. The outraged mob of Tbilisi Armenians strongly demanded that gravestones be placed back, and a bitter quarrel began.

Even part of Caspian hydrocarbon resources is incommensurable with Russian supplies

The energy summit in Baku mostly pursued political goals, which is quite natural, as Ilham Aliyev has to once more establish himself in the eyes of his people as a president who always does what is beneficial for his country.

November 15, 2008
Against the background of the world crisis and falling prices on oil the 4th energy summit was organized in Baku on November 14. The summit was of rather a great significance after the «five-day war» changed the South Caucasus, since the war proved how "secure" it is to transit hydrocarbon from the Caspian region to Europe. The problems of security of hydrocarbons passing through the territory of Georgia and Turkey had been discussed a lot, but, in all probability, the war was necessary for total realization of it.

World War I had sad consequences for Armenia

Among many other things, the World War I also went down in history with the first mass killings of the peaceful population, which later on was to be defined as «genocide».

November 13, 2008
On November 11 the whole world summoned up the end of the World War I. In 1918 the world entered into the repartition process, which is not yet over. It was at that time that a new diplomacy was put into effect, and even 90 years later it has not finished yet. In total the World War I resulted in the collapse of four empires: the German Empire, the Russian Empire, the Dual Monarchy of Austro-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, the last two being divided, while Germany and Russia ceased to be monarchies and were cut off in territory. However, it was especially their weakness that led to the World War II.

Recalling the Catastrophe of European Jews the world can't forget about the Armenian Genocide

No president or prime-minister of Turkey will ever lay a wreath on the Memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, even if it costs them a membership in the EU.

November 11, 2008
Last week Germany and Israel marked 70 years since «Kristallnacht» (Crystal Night), Jewish pogroms in Nazi Germany, which served as a prelude to the Catastrophe of European Jews (the Holocaust). On the night of 9-10 November 1938 Jewish property was destroyed, and thousands of synagogues were demolished and set on fire by the Nazis. About a hundred Jews were murdered and thousands were arrested or deported to concentration camps. The bloody pogroms received the name «Crystal Night» or «The Night of Broken Glass» for the countless broken windows of Jewish shops and houses covering the streets of German cities.

Turkey is preparing for a regional leap

For the past eight years Ankara has got used to speaking to the USA in a language of blackmail and ultimatums, using as a basic instrument of pressure the security of American forces in Iraq and the pipeline Baku-Tbilisi-Ceihan.

November 8, 2008
Turkey is following in Russia's footsteps. Medvedev invited the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan to sign in Moscow a declaration on peaceful regulation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict; Ankara is trying to take the key position in the struggle for regional supremacy. Both Moscow and Ankara are in a hurry - there is little time left till shift of Administration in the White House.
