Edward Nalbandian: absence of adequate response to Baku’s military rhetoric may lead to serious consequences

PanARMENIAN.Net - The threat to use force is a violation of international law. And absence of adequate response to such a bellicose behaviour may lead to serious consequences, Armenian Foreign Minister stated, commenting on Azerbaijan’s military rhetoric in an interview with Der Standard Austrian newspaper.

As Edward Nalbandian noted, “only in one year Azerbaijan doubled its military budget. Azerbaijan refuses the proposals of the international community to come to an agreement on non-use of force, consolidation of ceasefire, withdrawal of snipers from the line of contact. I do not think that anyone could believe that such a behaviour of the Azerbaijani authorities does not pose a danger.”

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
