Oppositionist: ANC considers national interests in struggle against authorities September 28, 2011 - 15:36 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian National Congress (ANC) opposition bloc could have caused a change of power, were it not for national interest and Nagorno Karabakh issue, preventing the Congress from drastic actions, said the leader of Democratic Motherland opposition party. “However, regular elections may lead the country to a standstill,” Petros Makeyan told a news conference in Yerevan. “ANC will continue urging its supporters to take to the streets to voice their protest. The Congress hopes to recruit so many people that the thought of shooting into the crowd wouldn’t cross the authorities’ mind,” he stressed. As the member of ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Mkrtich Minastyan noted in return, “Armenian authorities will never risk a civil war.” On September 23, ANC urged those present at Yerevan-hosted opposition rally to prepare for civil disobedience march. As ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrossian announced, more frequent rallies are to follow, with ANC posing new demands to authorities.
