Restrictions of Gas Supplies to Armenia Population Possible

PanARMENIAN.Net - ArmRosgazprom Company, the exclusive gas supplier to Armenia, has not imposed restrictions for gas supplies to the population and industrial objects, except for the Hrazdan thermal power station. However, if gas supplies to Armenia are not restored soon, the company will limit gas supplies first to gas stations and then to the population. As Company Press Secretary Shushan Sardaryan reported the restrictions will not touch life support objects.

Press Secretary of the Ministry of Ecology of Armenia Lusine Harutyunyan confirmed that owing to cessation of natural gas supplies to Armenia, gas supplies and consequently generation of electric power was stopped at Hrazdan thermal power station, owned by RAO UES of Russia. The second largest thermal power station the Yerevan one has not stopped yet, however it transferred to economical regime. In the words of Press Secretary of the Energy Ministry of Armenia, the energy system of the country operates in an intense regime at the moment. Thermal power stations account for 25% of the electric power being generated in the country. Since the gas pipeline in North Ossetia was blown up, Armenia stopped exporting electric power to neighboring Georgia. Lusine Harutyunyan found it difficult to name the consequences of further retardation of repair works at the gas pipeline in North Ossetia.

Almost all public transport, as well as private route taxis in Armenia use liquefied gas as fuel. If ArmRosgazprom stops supplies to gas stations, a transport crisis may take place. At present, ArmRosgazprom continues pumping gas from Abovyan gas storage with capacity of 80 million cubic meters of gas. Lately Armenia daily consumed some 5.3 million cubic meters of gas. It was earlier reported that the republic has increased electricity import from Iran, reported IA Regnum.
