October 17 - International Day for Poverty Eradication

PanARMENIAN.Net - On October 17, 1987, over 100 people gathered in Trocadéro Square, Paris (where Universak Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948) to pay tribute to victims of poverty.

They all declared poverty a violation of human rights, and stressed the importance of protecting that right with joint efforts. They left relevant statements on the memory plaque opened that day. Constructions of the kind were also erected in many other countries worldwide.

October 17 is a day which attracts world's attention to the burdens the poor, enabling them to voice their problems and convince the world that leading role in fighting poverty belongs to them.

On December 22, 1992, UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on declaring October 17 an International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. UN Supreme Body called on all countries to conduct poverty eradication campaigns on that day, and appealed to intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to assist them in organizing national events on that occasion.
