Arnold Schwarzenegger:

I urge all freedom-loving people in the world to recognize the Armenian Genocide

PanARMENIAN.Net - For the first the State of California has recognized the Armenian Genocide in 1968. Soon after it the Armenian Genocide was recognized as the first genocide in the 20th century by the legislative body of the largest American state. In this connection the PanARMENIAN.Net turned to Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger.
What a role does the Armenian community play in the life of California
State?

California is home to nearly one million Armenians. Throughout the decades, the Armenian-American community has contributed to California agriculture, business, education, public service, sports and the arts. They have retained their distinct heritage, language and religion, greatly enriching our State's diverse history, industry and culture.

The greater part of the Armenian community members of California are descendants of those who survived the Genocide, and the issue of recognizing this crime has great importance for them. What do you think, how much is possible the adoption of H. Res. 106, that recognizes the Armenian Genocide by the U.S. Congress?

I have repeatedly recognized the Armenian Genocide and continue to urge all freedom-loving people in America and around the world to do the same. However, I am not going to comment specifically on federal legislation or resolutions pending in the U.S. Congress.

You proclaimed April 22-29 as "Days of Remembrance of the Armenian
Genocide". What particular events are scheduled in the framework of the Week?

There are numerous observances and events being organized and sponsored by a range of Armenian and non-Armenian organizations -- from the State Legislature and local cities, to religious and community groups, and educational and cultural institutions.

Information: The most influential and largest Armenian community of the United States resides in California. Generally they are descendants of those who survived the Armenian Genocide. Every governor of California in the course of recent more than 20 years proclaims April 24 as Commemorative Day for the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Today one of the most authoritative Armenian English-language newspapers - The California Courrier and "Masis" newspaper are being published in California. A number of Sunday schools function in the state. Famous Armenian writer William Saroyan, as well as great film-director Rouben Mamoulian were born in California.

The current Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger was reelected in November 2007 for the second term by the overwhelming majority of votes. U.S. House Armenian Caucus Co-Chair Adam Schiff and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who are active supporters for adopting the Armenian Genocide Resolution by the U.S. Congress, represent California in the legislative body of the U.S.
