Kazbegi opens today

PanARMENIAN.Net - Kazbegi check-point, located on the Georgian Military Highway at the Russian border near the Lars international automobile checkpoint, opens today.

Movement through Kazbegi - Upper Lars was shut down by the Russian side in July of 2006. The closure was caused by the need to repair the check-point and its equipment in line with modern standards. In early May, the ceremony of completing the construction of the international automobile checkpoint Upper Lars - the only one along the border between Russia and Georgia. Resumption of the works is complicated by the lack of diplomatic relations between Russia and Georgia.



$ 2.4 million was allocated for the construction of the post, supervised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

U.S. express confidence that in future Kazbegi checkpoint will promote economic development on both sides of the border.



The opening of a new checkpoint was attended by U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Tefft, the Minister of Finance of Georgia Kakha Baindurashvili, heads of Border and Patrol Police Zaza Gogava and George Grigalashvili, News-Georgia reports.
