Armenia to host skyrunning tournament on Mount AragatsSeptember 9, 2013 - 16:11 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Federation of Alpinism and Mountain Tourism, assisted by Grand Sport complex will host a skyrunning tournament on Mount Aragats September 14 through 15. Skyrunning is an extreme sport of mountain running above 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) where the incline exceeds 30% and the climbing difficulty does not exceed II° grade. The sport comprises a number of different disciplines from the short, steep Vertical Kilometer to the more popular SkyRace and SkyMarathon. Ultra SkyMarathons are becoming increasingly popular as are short vertical SkySpeed races which includes skyscraper racing. As the deputy chair of Armenian Federation of Alpinism Suren Danielyan told PanARMENIAN.Net the tournament will host over 50 sportsmen from Nagorno Karabakh, Russia, Georgia and Iran. The event aims at promotion of skyrunning in Armenia and a healthy lifestyle propaganda. All those whose physical shape and technical training meet tournament requirements are eligible for participation, with the participants required to submit a doctor’s certificate. Both male and female sportsmen are allowed into the race. Back in 2012, Armenian Federation of Alpinism held a closed skyrunning championship with only federation members eligible for participation.
