Turkey to restore Surp Kevork Armenian church

PanARMENIAN.Net - Under the decision of Erzurum Regional Council for Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage, Surp Kevork Armenian church of Canakci village in Bingol province of Turkey will be restored.

Facing threat of collapse, the more than 250-year-old church was almost entirely destroyed due to negligence. Chief of Canakci village, Mehmet Asal, declared that the church needs renovation, or else it will collapse and damage the neighboring houses, Tert.am reports citing Hye Tert.

There were 2549 Armenian churches in Western Armenia and the Ottoman Empire in 1914. According to UNESCO's 1974 estimates, 464 out of 913 buildings had disappeared after 1923, 252 were in ruins, while 197 were in need of thorough repair.
