Nakamura fined for breaking FIDE rules following Aronian's win

PanARMENIAN.Net - By the decision of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the U.S. chess player Hikaru Nakamura is stripped of 10% of the prize money of the Moscow-hosted Candidates Tournament for violation of the rules of the tournament, Russian media report.

After losing the game against the Armenian chess player Levon Aronian in Round 6, Nakamura did not attend the mandatory press conference to analyze the match. According to FIDE rules, for such a breach the player has to give 5% of the prize to the organizing committee of the tournament, and another 5% to the Federation.

The guaranteed prize fund of the Candidates Tournament is in excess of $420,000, with the first and last prizes envisaging €95,000 and €17,000 financial rewards, respectively.

Aronian took the lead at the sixth round of the World Chess Candidates Tournament in Moscow on March 17, with a stunning victory against Nakamura.

Aronian and Sergey Karjakin of Russia currently top the tournament with 5 points each, followed by Fabiano Caruana (4.5), Viswanathan Anand (4.5), Anish Giri (4), Peter Svidler (3.5), Nakamura (3) and Veselin Topalov (2.5).
