Armenian wrestler strikes bronze at Junior World Championships

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia’s Sergey Simonyan won bronze on the opening day of the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior World Championships in Mâcon, France.

Fighting in the Greco-Roman 50 kg category, Simonyan first crushed Azerbaijan's Ziyad Zeynalov, then defeated an Italian wrestler in the 1/4 finals to reach the semifinals. Losing his penultimate bout to Russia's Vladislav Melnikov who proceeded to the strike a gold medal, Simonyan beat Kyrgyz wrestler Adilet Taalaibekov 2:1 to win bronze.

Gevorg Khumaryan (60 kg) and Arman Baghdasaryan (74 kg), also Greco-Roman wrestlers from Armenia, participated in the championship too, but failed to fetch medals.

The Championship launched on Tuesday, August 31 and set to run through September 4.

Greco-Roman wreslters Edgar Tamazyan (55kg), Malkhas Amoyan (66kg), Edgar Khachatryan (120 kg), as well as freestyle wrestlers Arman Antonyan (50 kg), Mkhitar Grigoryan (55 kg), Harutyun Barseghyan (60 kg), Hakob Avetisyan (66 kg), Tigran Mnatsakanyan (74 kg) and Sargis Hovsepyan (96 kg) still have the chance to win medals for Armenia.
