Abkhazian President’s life attempted

PanARMENIAN.Net - An unknown person fired at the car of Abkhazian President Alexander Ankvab on Wednesday, Feb 22 morning.

Ankvab was not injured, said a source in Abkhazia’s law enforcement agency, RIA Novosti reported.

"The President’s car was fired upon near the town of Gudauta on the way to Sukhumi. He was not injured but his bodyguard was seriously wounded," the source said.

Ankvab, who was Abkhazia's interior minister from 1992 to 1993, garnered nearly 55 percent of the vote in the election on August 26, 2011, in the tiny mountainous region on the Black Sea coast which declared independence from Georgia in 1999.

Abkhazia, along with South Ossetia, was recognized by Russia as independent states.
