Iranian parliamentary elections 2nd round due May 4March 17, 2012 - 13:37 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Iran is to hold a second round of 9th Majlis elections on May 4 after a total of 225 candidates succeeded in securing the required majority of votes to win parliamentary seats in the first round. The runoff vote for the remaining 65 parliament seats will be held in the Iranian capital of Tehran and other main cities. Iran's Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar has announced that the Majlis run-off elections will be held after the Guardian Council, which supervises elections in Iran, confirms the results of the first round of the legislative polling. He added that 130 candidates will compete in the runoff vote. More than 64 percent of some 48 million eligible voters cast their ballots in Iran’s 9th parliamentary elections, held on March 2, with 75 percent of the candidates from the Principlist camp securing the Majlis seats. Out of 30 candidates in the Tehran constituency, only five succeeded in winning the majority of votes in the first round of the elections. According to Iranian law, parliamentary candidates must receive at least a quarter of the votes in each riding in order to win a seat in the Majlis. Otherwise, the riding must advance to a second round of voting, Press TV reported.
