Vladimir Dorokhin: Russia will intensify mediation efforts to resolve Karabakh conflict

PanARMENIAN.Net - According to the statement signed in Astana, Russia will intensify its mediation efforts to resolve Karabakh conflict, the Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan Vladimir Dorokhin stated.

According to the ambassador, the latest meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan, was a next contact to determine possible joint steps to resolve Karabakh conflict, after the summit in Astana.

Moscow hosted a meeting of foreign ministers of Armenia Edward Nalbandian, Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov and Russia Sergei Lavrov Dec. 9, where the sides discussed Karabakh conflict settlement, Trend reported.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
