Further delay in determining Kosovo's status threatens security of the whole worldJuly 12, 2007 - 18:47 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Any further delay in determining the final status of Kosovo will have negative consequences both for this breakaway province of Serbia and the world community, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated today to a press conference. The UN Sec. Gen. also expressed hope that the Security Council will agree on an earlier proposed plan, which supposes 120 days for consultations; after expiration of that period Kosovo will be granted independence. The press conference was held after the meeting between Ban Ki-moon and President of Kosovo Fatmir Sejdiu. The United States and European Union have approved the plan on Kosovo, which grants independence to this province under international control. In this light Russia's approval is a key issues for determining Kosovo's future. However, Moscow's stance remains unchanged. Russia insists that decisions must be made taking into account interests of both sides and is ready to veto any resolution that grants independence to Kosovo from Serbia, since it will create a dangerous precedent. The latest draft resolution introduced by the United States and European Union offers to postpone the process of granting independence to Kosovo for 4 months. According to the draft resolution, UN Sec. Gen. Ban Ki-moon must organize talks between Belgrade and Pritina during 120 days. Besides, the resolution prescribes both sides to "avoid from unilateral decisions concerning the final status of the province during the 120-day period", RBK reports.
