As the Embassy statement says, this either appeared as result of unawareness of Koran's surah about Blessed Virgin Mary or was targeted at igniting hostility between Christians and Muslims. Condemning the cartoon caricatures of Prophet Muhammad in the European press the Iranian Embassy bitterly censured offending attacks against Jesus Christ and Blessed Virgin Mary. It should be noted that the Iranian Embassy was the first structure to react to the publication in Yeni Khabar weekly. The author of the publication says it was a response to the outrage of the Prophet in European media and the right of freedom of speech. Chairman of the Union of Press of Azerbaijan Aflatun Amashev also condemned the publication. He noted that it conflicts with the Constitution, media legislation and the Journalist's Code.
