Turkey's Erdogan pledges to tackle election of new Armenian Patriarch

PanARMENIAN.Net - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to help organize the election of a new Patriarch for the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Chairman of the board of trustees of Istanbul's St. Peter Armenian hospital Petros Sirinoglu said he met with the Turkish president on Thursday, January 26 and discussed a number of issues concerning the election.

"Erdogan said the reason behind the delay is the Armenian community's negligence, as authorities do not interfere in this process at all," Sirinoglu told Agos newspaper.

Erdogan promised that Turkish authorities will address the issue immediately after a referendum on constitutional amendments.

Four candidates have been nominated to replace Mesrop II Mutafyan as the new Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople.
