Georgian President optimistic about regional peace

PanARMENIAN.Net - President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili stated that the tense situation in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations in the South Caucasus is nearing an end. He made the remarks during a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade, APA reports.

According to Kavelashvili, the South Caucasus remains a key region connecting East and West.

“This corridor will also open major opportunities for the Serbs. We will develop closer ties with Balkan countries via the Black Sea. This will allow us to include more issues in our bilateral agenda,” he added.

Vučić, in turn, emphasized Georgia’s strategic geographic importance: “Georgia is a wonderful country on the Black Sea, bordering Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Armenia.”

On August 8, during a trilateral meeting at the White House, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint declaration on the outcomes of their Washington summit.

In the presence of the leaders, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov preliminarily signed an agreement titled “On the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
