IOC reduces weight classes for amateur male box

PanARMENIAN.Net - In its recent session held in Milan, Italy, AIBA Executive Committee approved decision on reducing the number of male boxers' weight divisions to 10, instead of former 11. Committee also determined male and female sportsmen's quotas for 2012 London Olympics.



Let's note that in its August 13 session (Berlin), IOC Executive Committee made decision to include female box in 2012 Olympic program.



Prizes will be drawn in 3 weigh classes: 51kg., 60 kg. and 75 kg. Considering IOC's decision, AIBA has reduced male boxers' weight classes to 10.



Lightweight divisions have also decreased in number. The 4 initial weights established formerly (48 kg., 51 kg, 54 kg. And 57 kg.) were replaced by three new categories - 49 kg., 52 kg. and 56 kg. Heavyweight divisions (60 kg. and more) have remained unchanged - 56 kg., 64 kg., 69 kg., 75 kg., 81 kg., 91 kg. and more. New weigh divisions will be effective beginning September 1, 2010 and apply to all tournaments organized under the aegis of AIBA.



AIBA has also determined male and female boxers' quotas depending on their weight classes. It has established the following quotas for male sportsmen: 49 kg - 26 boxers, 52-56kg. - 26, 56 kg. -28, 60kg. - 28, 64 kg. - 28, 69 kg. - 28. 75 kg.- 28, 81 kg. - 26. 91 kg. - 16, 91 kg. and more - 16.



Thus, 250 male boxers will participate in 2010 Olympics. The number of female sportsmen representing all 3 weight classes (51 kg., 60 kg. 75 kg) will be 12.
