Decision on basic principles of Karabakh conflict settlement to be taken in Kazan

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Azerbaijani, Russian and Armenian presidents will make a decision on draft project of the basic principles of Karabakh conflict settlement during Kazan meeting next week, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying.

"The expectations are great," he said. "It is planned to consider the integrity of the project on basic principles of Karabakh conflict settlement in accordance with the agreements reached at the upcoming summit."

He stressed that the wording of the document was agreed upon at the meetings of the three countries' foreign ministers in Moscow in April and June.

"Discussions allowed approximation of positions on several key issues," he said. "The Presidents will consider these developments and take appropriate actions."

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
