CPA: South Sudan is the best example for Karabakh settlement

PanARMENIAN.Net - Karabakh conflict must be settled by the model of conflict resolution in South Sudan, according to Ruben Tovmasyan , head of Communist Party of Armenia.

“The example of South Sudan is the most appropriate from the viewpoint of Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement. First and foremost, referendum will be held in Karabakh and only after that all other issues will be solved,” Tovmasyan told a press conference in Yerevan.

In case with Karabakh conflict, besides principle of people’s right for self-determination, another important factor should be taken into consideration as well, that is, the language in Karabakh which has been and remains Armenian.

South Sudan became the world’s newest nation early Saturday, July 9, officially breaking away from Sudan after two civil wars over five decades that cost the lives of millions. Agreement on ceasefire was signed between the authorities of the Republic of the Sudan and rebels from South in 2005. According to the document, the South Sudan obtained the status of autonomy independent from North, and gained the right for referendum for detaching from the Republic. But the referendum was held only at the beginning of 2011. The voting completed with over 98% of the South Sudanese population in favor of new independent state.

Republic of the Sudan first recognized the independence of the South Sudan.

Armenia also was among those first countries to recognize the independence of the republic.

According to Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, proclamation of South Sudan independence illustrates the principle of peoples’ right for self-determination, proving civilized way for conflict settlement possible.
