Armenia may benefit from Norwegian expertise in hydropower engineering November 9, 2011 - 10:58 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - On November 9, Norwegian Norsk Energi company with local parter Hydroenergetica presented a three-year program in Yerevan on small hydropower sector with a purpose of providing consultation regarding environmental protection and social impact. Issues referring to energy security, provision and diversification of sustainable energy sources, development of hydropower engineering were at the focus of Armenian government. According to Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, in September 2011 Armenian government confirmed the strategy of hydropower engineering development which through midget power plants envisages 1 bln kilowatt energy production per hour against current 400 mln. kilowatt. In this context, he noted that Norway that possesses enough oil and gas recourses gets 90% of energy consumption through midget power plants. “Norway’s expertise in this field may serve an example for Armenia,” Armenian Foreign Minister added. Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store, in turn, noted that economic development should be based on sustainable use of resources.
