Government decides to place stores in Mashtots Park for 3 yearsMarch 15, 2012 - 12:03 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - About 50-60 activists protecting Mashtots Park gathered at the government building on March 15 which hosted the governmental meeting, with posters saying “The park belongs to us”, “Police head must be punished”, etc. Protesters demanded that a government’s representative meet them to explain the anti-constitutional actions of the police. Otherwise, activists claimed, the government will demonstrate that it joins the mentioned anti-constitutional move. Late at March 14 night, the police surrounded the peaceful activists in the park, dismantled their tent using brutal force, and confiscated their belongings. Police Deputy Colonel Karen Movsisyan tried to calm them down urging not to disturb the governmental meeting. Later the government announced its new decision on placing the stores in Mashtots Park for three years. The environmental activists are steadfast in their stance saying a public area cannot be turned into a trade center.
