British MP Urges South Caucasus to Closer Cooperation with EU

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Parliament Speaker Artur Baghdassaryan received a delegation of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) faction of the European Parliament, led by ALDE chair, British representative Graham Watson, reported the Press Service of the Armenian Parliament. Artur Baghdassaryan told the European MPs that after the constitutional reform the NA agenda includes over 70 bills and changes to laws already in effect. During the meeting the parties arrived at a conclusion that return of the opposition to the Parliament is very important. The Armenian Speaker hailed the Euro Parliament resolution over destruction of Armenian monuments in Old Julfa, Azerbaijan.

The parties agreed on the need to promote democratic processes in order to develop political and economic processes in the region, as well as peaceful conflict settlement. Bulgaria and Romania will become EU members in 2006, Watson remarked. He urged countries of the region to closer cooperation with the EU. During the meeting the development of the relations between the EP and the Armenian NA was also touched upon. ALDE is the third largest faction at the Euro Parliament and has a considerable weight in decision-making.
