Egypt can become a truly leading country in Greater Middle East

The fact that Egypt became an initiator and conductor of the peace talks with Israel is not by accident. Thus, at least for a while, it became a country to be reckoned with.

Turkey stepped up its efforts in the struggle for regional leadership because of the weakness of Egypt. According to the Egyptian opposition, Turkey and Iran make use of the weakness of the Arab world to conquer the whole region with the help of Islam. In the opinion of Mustafa Bakri, editor-in-chief of the Egyptian weekly newspaper Al Osboa, Iran wants the entire region to be Shia, and Turkey's ambitions go even further. "Sooner or later Iraq will become a Kurdistan, so we can only hope for the Arab unity. We adhere to the covenants of President Nasser. This primarily refers to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Gamal Abdel Nasser used to say: What was taken by force, can be returned only by force," stressed Bakri.

PanARMENIAN.Net - In this regard, the likeness between the Palestinian-Israeli and the Karabakh conflicts is much stronger than it seems. To begin with, 4 million Jews have been successfully withstanding the half-a-billion Arab world for over 60 years by now. We face the same situation in Nagorno-Karabakh: 140 thousand Armenians against eight million Azeris. Moreover, the confrontation carries on to great advantage of the minorities, although it must have been vice versa. Perhaps the point is that the Armenians and Jews are government-establishing nations, and having finally declared independence, they are ready to preserve it at any rate.

By the way, the question of why the Palestinians did not establish their government in 1947 according to UN resolutions, but started a war against Israel instead, has no yet received any logical answer. There immediately started vague arguments on the Palestinians' alleged aspiration for a different resolution, the Jews' active settlement in and colonization of the Arab lands, and the like.

The fact that it was especially Egypt that became the initiator and conductor of the peace talks with Israel is not a mere accident. In that way, at least for a while, she became a country to be reckoned with. And it was primarily the USA that realized it, as she believes that Egypt is the country to make friends and establish amicable relations with. And all this happens despite the fact that the Egyptian opposition has quite an anti-American disposition. Nevertheless, we must admit that the Camp David accords and the subsequent steps of the U.S. administration somehow preserve the peace in the region. Small-scale military operations, of course, do not count. Even the operation Cast Lead would not have received such a great response, if Turkey and later some other Arab countries had not intervened.

However, as we have already mentioned, the Arab world is rather disunited and the roots of this disunity lie in the tribal hostility lasting for millenniums, which leaves no chances for the national idea to ripen. As it turned out, even Islam was not able to become a linking element. And the Jews, like Armenians, are united in achieving end results.

Besides, the Arabs are quite inert. This may be the impact of the desert, which has accustomed them to the long expectations of water, oasis and food. Perhaps that is why the elections in Egypt are remarkably quiet.. For decades the country has been ruled by the National Democratic Party, headed by the President. By the way, the Constitution allows all parties except those professing Islamic fundamentalism. Neither there are parties of radical clerics. Perhaps this is why Egypt can become a truly leading country in the Greater Middle East.
