Baku Thinks Treaty Signing at Kocharian-Aliyev First Meeting This Year Unreal

PanARMENIAN.Net - "The Azerbaijani leadership has many times expressed discontent with the OSCE Minsk Group activities. Some functionaries even stated that the mediation should be stopped," head of the department of foreign relations at the Azeri president administration Novruz Mamedov said when commenting on the possibility of signing a peace treaty on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement during the first this year meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents. "The Co-Chairs were active in 2005, they paid several meetings to the region, twice met with the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan and held meetings with the Foreign Ministers. Thus the peaceful process intensified," Mamedov said. According to him, there is a number of other reasons which activated the process, these being, the activities of the Azerbaijani President targeted at the strengthening of the republic's positions, its leading role in the region and strengthening of the economic potential and army. In Mamedov's words, all this plays a significant role for Azerbaijan and also has impact upon Armenia. "This is a competition Armenia cannot stand. The Azerbaijani President's position and successful negotiations with various states also appear as a powerful factor for the process," he stated. Presently the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, leaders of other organizations and states anchor big hopes with the year of 2006, he added.

"This is not a chaotic process. This is the result of the constant and purposeful activities of the Azerbaijani leadership. From this viewpoint one can expect that certain steps will be undertaken. However the Armenian authorities impede the process. I do not think that a peaceful treaty will be signed during the upcoming meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents," Mamedov stated, Trend agency reported.
