Heritage against possible NATO peacekeeping mission in Karabakh conflict

PanARMENIAN.Net - "I do not think NATO will be involved in regional conflicts, as it was in  South Ossetia, where NATO avoided direct involvement in the conflict. The last discussion of reports in the framework of Parliamentary Assembly also demonstrated that NATO has a very cautious approach towards participation in regional conflicts, " Stepan Safaryan , RA MP from Heritage party told a press conference in Yerevan today, which was jointly held  with a deputy from the Republican Party of Armenia Karen Avagyan.

According to Mr. Safaryan, another situation is developed in terms of political engagement of NATO in the regional processes, and there are different levels of cooperation. Mr. Safaryan also said that the Heritage party is against direct intervention of NATO in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict in the form of a peacekeeping mission.

Stepan Safaryan expressed concerns, that the current Armenian authorities "may even accept the presence of peacekeepers on the ground fire."

National Assembly deputy from the Republican Party of Armenia Karen Avagyan did not exclude the possibility of involvement of peacekeeping forces in conflict zone. He stressed that  presence of peacekeepers would not be critical, as the Armenian armed forces are able independently to ensure the security of Armenia and Artsakh. "In respect of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, NATO hasn't made any statement, but simply put a peaceful settlement of the problem within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group," Karen Avagyan emphasized.
