Energy-saving outdoor lighting system reaches Armenia's rural areasNovember 28, 2016 - 17:42 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The village of Martiros has a history of more than 700 years. The border community which boasts a host of historical and cultural assets, has been left with dark streets since 1990. In framework of the Alternative Energy project, collaboratively implemented by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and VivaCell-MTS, an outdoor lighting system with 52 LED street lights has been installed along some 1,716 m long area. VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian, FPWC Founder Ruben Khachatryan, head of Zaritap community Simon Babayan and community residents attended the launch of the modern system. The use of environmentally friendly and energy saving LED lamps are cost-efficient especially for villages with a limited budget. LED lamps are more productive and can reduce the community's outdoor lighting costs by up to 80%. “Border villages remain in the focus of our partners’ and our attention. We do our best to solve the problems, often opting for a stage-by-stage settlement. The flexibility of this program allows for serving to the needs of our compatriots in various communities. This year, the energy-saving system has been implemented in six villages of Vayots Dzor province,” said Yirikian. The lamps will lighten the streets of Martiros community from 9:00pm to midnight in summer, from 6:00pm to 11:00pm in winter, and all night long during holidays.
