Azeri fans outraged at Armenian boxer's win in World Championship quaterfinals![]() July 28, 2011 - 17:29 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - World Boxing Championship in Astana is hosting Armenian youth team. 2 members of the Amrenian team, Gor Jevelekyan (66kg) and Seryozha Hakobyan (+80 kg) have made it to championship semifinals thus securing a bronze medal. In championship quarterfinals, Jevelekyan beat Bulgaria’s Alexander Kostov 10:6; Hakobyan gained a 10:8 win over Azerbaijan's Muhammedali Tairov. As Armenian Boxing Federation vice-president Samvel Gasparyan told PanARMENIAN.Net reporter from Astana, the Armenian boxer's victory outraged Azeri fans, who considered it unfair. “Hakobyan's performance was very active. Taken aback, the Azeri contender stopped fighting by the rules. Despite having been knocked down, our boxer managed to pull himself together and win the fight,” Gasparyan explained. The organisers succeeded in calming down discontented Azerbaijani fans. At July 29 semifinals, Jevelekyan will face a Turkish boxer, with Hakobyan to rival a member of Kazakh team. From June 3-7, it will go to Northern Ireland and then the Republic of Ireland - the only country outside UK on the torch route. Beckham is acting as a special ambassador for the games and was involved in promoting London's bid to host it. To mark the start of the Olympic Torch Relay the British Embassy Yerevan opens graffiti on the wall of the embassy. China's Tan Zongliang came first with 684,6 points, followed by Ismail Keles (Turkey) and Russia’s Vladimir Goncharov. |
