U.S. calls on Israel, Palestine to resume talks

PanARMENIAN.Net - The U.S. government reiterates the possibility of proclaiming the Palestinian state only as a result of talks with Israel, and not through the UN mandate, a White House spokesman said.

“the administration believes Palestinians will not achieve sovereignty through UN mandate and voting in that organization. The only way is direct talks with Israel. The administration keeps calling on the sides to continue peaceful talks which will lead Palestinians to establish state,” Jay Carney told journalists on board of presidential plane during President Barack Obama’s visit to New Jersey.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared in March that he will turn to the UN for the recognition of the sovereign Palestinian state with the borders of 1965, in the territory of the West Bank of the Jordan and Gaza Strip with the capital in West Jerusalem. This announcement stirred up Israel, U.S. and a number of western countries, which labeled this act as one-sided and came up for resuming peaceful talks with Israel, halted in September 2010 due to the issue of Israeli settlements.

Israel wouldn’t withdraw to the 1967 borders and share Jerusalem with Palestinians declaring it as its “eternal capital.”
