Facebook users restored Armenian interface of the social network

Review of July 5-11 telecommunication and information technology events.

Information security was in the focus of discussions over the past week. Armenian bloggers have created wiki.hayqpress.com internet resource as an alternative to largest internet encyclopedia – Wikipedia. The created resource provides unbiased and neutral information on Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Founder of wiki.hayqpress.com, blogger Sedrak Mkrtchyan said that the decision to create such a resource was taken after a group of Azerbaijani internet users, known as 26 Baku wikipedians, launched a coordinated anti-Armenian campaign on Wikipedia. "The Azerbaijani group have launched a real lobbying campaign on Wikipedia, placing anti-Armenian materials there. The resource established by us is open for placement of fair and unbiased information. Moreover, it is protected from Turkish and Azerbaijani attacks," Mkrtchyan told a press conference in Yerevan.

Recently, the Arbitration Committee of Russian-language section of Wikipedia adopted a decision on the case of 26 Baku wikipedians on the charges of violation of Wikipedia rules. The activity of the most persistent violators has been banned on Wikipedia for the term from 3 to 6 months.

Meanwhile, “Let’s attack the Armenian Facebook” group was revealed in Facebook social network. The group was distorting the Armenian translation of the website and attacking Armenian users of it. It includes 688 people, with Azerbaijanis making majority. Group members were coordinating voting for their versions of translation, as a result of which the Armenian interface of the website was replaced with insults. Besides, a group was created to organize attacks against Armenian channels on Youtube. Starting from July 2, the group of users was attacking the Armenian version of Facebook. Using Translation application for the localization of the social network in other languages, the group replaced the interface translation with Azerbaijani propaganda and insults. It became possible, as Facebook's translation into the Armenian language is being beta-tested (it is localized by 73%). Armenian users informed Facebook's management of the incident, but finally solved the problem by themselves.

According to blogger Tigran Kocharyan, Iran is the only country in the region not engaged into anti-Armenian propaganda. “It’s rather difficult to counteract the anti-Armenian propaganda spread by Turkish internet users who have matured in information struggle,” he said. “One thing is to develop a concept of information security and another thing is to implement it. Nevertheless, Armenian state agencies carry out more coordinated activity in the information field as compared with previous years,” he said, adding that information wars do not have winners and losers, as the situation is constantly changing.
