French Senate not authorised to debate historic issues - SenatorJanuary 23, 2012 - 18:50 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Criminalization of Armenian Genocide denial mustn’t be discussed at French Senate, according to Senator Jean-Pierre Sueur. “Senators are in no position to pass history-related decisions, with the authority vested in court only,” Sueur said. “Constitutional Commission’s resolving against Genocide bill debate does not mitigate the crime of Genocide negation. I deeply commiserate with the victims of 1915 massacres in Ottoman Empire, however, believing the Senate is not a place this decision should be debated at,” the Sentator said, noting the Genocide bill to run counter to democracy principles. Constitutional Commission of the French Senate passed a decision against debating of the bill criminalizing Armenian Genocide denial, accepting Senators’ solicitation that oppose the aforesaid legislation. The proposal on rejection of the bill was adopted with 23 votes for, 9 against and 8 abstentions, according to the official website of the French Senate. The decision stipulates debate of the draft law by the Senate, considering the proposal of the Commission prior to the overall voting. Top stories Six total incidents have burned 19 old-growth trees.
