In Chatham House President of Armenia says what he was supposed to

It is at least not serious to find some connotation in Armenian President’s invitation to London or, worse yet, try to find unfounded implications in his speech.

In normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations there has come a point after which any delay in the process or complete breakdown of it would be fraught with unpleasant consequences for all the interested parties both in the region and in the whole world. From this point of view Armenian President’s speech in Chatham House can be considered significant, as exactly on February 10 all the ways to a retreat were barred for Turkey.

PanARMENIAN.Net - However, there is also a big “if”, reflected in the position of Azerbaijan, the only country that is against normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, naively believing or simply saying that she believes in “quick settlement of the Karabakh conflict”. Nobody is any longer ‘impressed’ by the “comments” of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry or Azeri politicians, who for lack of imagination, distort the information released by Turkish media. This time too Baku was unable to control itself and on behalf of Foreign Ministry Press Attaché Goshgar Zeynalov, offered a five-page commentary on the Armenian President’s statement in Chatham House. It’s not even the fact that Baku does not keep to basic ethics accepted throughout the world: the head of state can only be commented on by another head of state.

But, apparently, these principles are not accepted in Baku. Mr. Zeynalov said nothing new. For 20 years the Azeri agitation and propaganda department has been reiterating one and the same thing, never minding how it all looks in the eyes of the world community. But let us leave alone the Baku agitprop, especially since in the past two days Azeri politicians do not really realize what they do. For example, First Vice-Speaker of the Milli Mejlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan Ziyafet Askerov is going to request the U.S. Congress to put an end to the pressure exerted on Turkey for ratification of Armenian-Turkish Protocols. According to him, studying the current state of affairs, the world community and the OSCE Minsk Group should have exerted pressure on Armenia, but instead they put pressure on Turkey. It is clear that Baku does its best to “appease” Turkey, thus trying to prevent the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, not realizing that the train has already left. Moreover, the response message from Turkish President to Serzh Sargsyan was yet another tub of cold water for Ilham Aliyev.

But let us revert to Chatham House. It would be naive to believe that the Armenian President’s statement was simply initiative of the Royal Institute. After all, for Britain Azerbaijan, or rather its oil, is much more preferable than the right of the Karabakh Armenians or the Armenian Genocide recognition. As one of the members of the House of Lords said, “Recognition of the Armenian Genocide means nothing to Great Britain but deterioration of relations with Turkey”. Everything happening now fits into the old truth: the UK has no permanent friends or eternal enemies, she has only eternal interests. By the way, this principle applies to all countries that seek leadership at any level.

So, it is at least not serious to find some connotation in Armenian President’s invitation to London or, worse yet, try to find unfounded implications in his speech. Serzh Sargsyan said what he was supposed to, and it is secondary whether it was acceptable for everyone or not. The most important thing is that the statement was received by all whom it was addressed to. This is the biggest breakthrough for Armenia in regional processes. Hardly is it possible that any of those present in the room did not know about the fate of Nagorno-Karabakh, Nakhichevan or the Armenian Genocide... For most politicians not only words but also the time and place of their proclamation are important. This time everything happened together, and - what is most important – it all happened with the desire of the interested parties to show Turkey and Aliyev their place. It is possible that at the end of the year the Presidents of Armenia and Turkey will be awarded with Nobel Prize for opening the last closed border in Europe. Maybe this is the price that suits Ankara. Under present circumstances Armenia gets a lot more. As for Azerbaijan, she remains with what she has: the Republic of Azerbaijan within the borders of 1918. Aliyev should not count on more.
