Azerbaijan is not yet sure what she achieved in Astana, but just in case speaks of victory

Following the adoption of the final declaration of the OSCE summit in Astana, Baku lapsed into silence, as if on command.

Hardly had the ink dried on the signed OSCE declaration on regulation of the Karabakh conflict, when Azerbaijani political scientists, led by Mubariz Ahmedoglu, hurried to declare the statement to be “the success of the Azerbaijani diplomacy and the failure of the Armenian diplomacy”. One can only make guesses about where in the document Ahmedoglu found success or failure. It also makes one be surprised at not only the stupidity but also at the naivety of Baku agitprop, which has always been infamous for its ability to distort the meaning of any document so that even its draftsmen could not recognize it.

PanARMENIAN.Net - “The declaration defined the course of implementation of the document adopted in Aquila, but a step forward is the signing of this document by the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia,” said Director of the Center for Political Innovation and Technology, Mubariz Ahmedoglu. He is right, but next thought of Ahmedoglu is somehow incomprehensible. Judge for yourself. “After the Astana summit, the Karabakh issue will be discussed in the UN Security Council.” Why and where Ahmedoglu picked this idea remains a mystery. And all this was despite the fact that a few hours before, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had declared that the conflict was to be settled within the OSCE Minsk Group and snipers must be withdrawn from the firing line. But it’s unfavorable for Baku to quote what concerns her directly. She finds it better to fool herself. After Heydar Aliyev put it on the map, Azerbaijan has always been good at it.

And the last pearl of wisdom. “The text sounds categorical, emphasizing the importance of basic principles of peaceful settlement. But in comparison to the opportunities and requirements of Azerbaijan, I believe, the importance of this document becomes unimportant,” he added. So, should we take it as victory or defeat of diplomacy?

One gets the impression that Ahmedoglu comments not on the declaration of the summit, but on his own president who, as always, is unoriginal. “Armenia continues to use force to maintain control over the occupied territories, however, Azerbaijan, as before, will be devoted to peaceful talks in the hope that one day they will bear fruit,” said President Ilham Aliyev at the summit in Astana.

However, after the final declaration of the OSCE summit in Astana, Baku, as if on command, lapsed into silence. Knowing the Azerbaijani realities, we can say that the command, indeed, was given. And it indicates that no matter how hard the Azeri agitprop tried to conceal from its people the failure of the Azerbaijani position in Astana, it didn’t work. On the other hand, it is not so appropriate to speak of the failure of Baku in Astana, since she got what she had long been asking for. We also believe that publications of WikiLeaks played here a role, too. Another question is to what extent these declassified files should be believed, but even if they were not exactly in the form which became the possession of the world community, they would have to be invented to put in his place high-handed Aliyev. Ilham Aliyev has forgotten the most important thing: the Caspian oil, for which the U.S. is so desperately fighting, is not the monopoly of Azerbaijan. There are also Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Russia. Aliyev can never compete with Nursultan Nazarbayev in the degree of influence and political weight. Even the president of Turkmenistan obviously beats Aliyev. It is also possible that the international community is already sick and tired of the president with manners of a mean feudal prince of exorbitant, unreasonable ambitions. Aliyev will be silently removed from his post and there will come to replace him a more adequate politician, who will understand that the Karabakh conflict has stopped existing since 1994 because of its settlement in favor of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh. But this is exactly what the president of Azerbaijan is unwilling to understand. Or, perhaps, he is unable?
