Vic Darchinyan:

Armenia may host one of my bouts in 2011

PanARMENIAN.Net - Vic Darchinyan was one of those sportsmen who made Armenia known worldwide. Having won many titles under Australian flag, he decided to represent his homeland since 2009. The year of 2010 was not easy. Vic was beaten by Abner Mares, what changed all his plans. In an interview with PanARMENIAN.Net, he told about his career prospects and bouts scheduled for 2011.
Before the bout against Mares your felt very confident and were the favorite. What happened? Why did Mares win?
Till the end of the bout I was sure that I won. All know that my advantage is strength. During this fight I tried a news strategy and showed technical holds. I didn’t doubt that the victory will be mine but judges gave it to Mares.

Your team appealed the judgment? Has any decision been taken to this regard?
It was clear during the fight that Mares is going to hit below the belt, and he did so several times. It was strange that the referee did not react to this. If you watch the video you will hear the referee telling Mares: “Don’t hit below the belt, I won’t be able to do anything more for you.” My team appealed the judgment and provided the video. The final decision will be taken in several weeks.

After this defeat, you said in the coming bouts you will deprive the judges from the possibility to decide who has won. Does it mean that you are going to knock Johnny Perez out?
Yes, this is my very objective. To knock Perez out. In this case, no judge will be able to say that I lost.

When are you going to start training for the bout against Perez and what do you expect from this fight?
This fight will be very important. If the bout against Mares is re-judged as a draw and if I beat Perez, I will have the opportunity to get my belts back in a fight against the winner of Mares-Agbeko bout. I will start training on February 2, when I return to Australia.

Is the venue and date for the Perez bout decided?
It will take place in Los Angeles on April 23 and will go on air of Armenian television on April 24. That is why this fight is very important for me.

Last year you promised to have one of your fights in Armenia in 2011…
Much depends on Showtime. To organize a fight in Armenia, a huge amount of equipment should be brought here. The opponent’s consent is also essential. Let’s see how it goes. There is a real opportunity for this.

Besides the featherweight fights, what other bouts are planning during the current year?
I will have three other bouts, maybe. I want to change the weight class and win new titles. I am not young already, so I want to reach new heights to be unreachable for other boxers.
