Armenian hockey players win silver at Division III World Championship

Hockey: Armenian hockey players win silver at Division III World Championship which took place in Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex from April 14 to 18. In the first round, Mongolia vs. North Korea match ended 22:1. Armenia beat the South African Republic 9: 2, wining all three periods. On April 15, Armenian ice-hockey players beat North Korea 7:6. South African Republic vs. Monglolia match ended 12:1. Ending the final match vs. North Korea 2:5, Armenian hockey players won the Championship silver. South African Republic won bronze, defeating Mongolia.

PanARMENIAN.Net - David Berger (South African Republic) was recognized the best goalkeeper, Armenia’s David Tagvoryan and Hakob Avetisyan were named the best fullback and forward respectively, and Kim Kwang Ho (North Korea) was the best scorer.

President of the Armenian National Olympic Committee Gagik Tsarukyan welcomed Armenian ice hockey players at the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs on April 19. Hailing them for good performance, Mr Tsarukyan said, “We didn’t expect such good results. You proved that ice hockey is developing in Armenia.” In completion of the meeting, he handed the National Olympic Committee Cup to the hockey players.

Chess: FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov appointed Chairman of the Chess Federation of Armenia, FIDE Vice President Vanik Zakaryan as member of the appellate commission of the Olympiad to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, from September 19 to October 4.

Ani Khanamiryan and Robert Hovhannesyan will participate in the Youth Chess Championships (u-20) which will take place in Poland, from August 2 to 17.

Armenian Grand Masters Lilit Mkrtchyan and Elina Danielyan will participate in 3rd Women's Grand Prix due April 25-May 8 in Nalchik.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic of Serbia reached the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Friday, dismissing Argentine David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-3. Nalbandian ran out of gas at the end of his successful week, striking 18 winners and 33 unforced errors. He will miss the action for at least two weeks due to a hamstring injury. This means he will not be able to play Barcelona Open and the Rome Masters.

Nalbandian’s spokesman Bernardo Ballero said that the Argentine will need at least 15 days to recover and could be back for a tournament in Madrid Open beginning on May 9.

Rafael Nadal is also out of Barcelona with a knee injury.

Football: Armenian youth football team will be playing against Estonia in Group 2 of 2011 European Championship qualifier due in Tallinn on May 20. Armenia are currently the 5th, having scored 7 points; Estonians came 3rd with 9 points to their score. Switzerland are leading with 16 points.

Some changes occurred in Armenia vs. Russia and Russia vs. Armenia EURO 2012 qualifiers schedule, as agreed between RA and RF Football Federations. Armenia will be hosting Russia on March 26, 2011. The return match will take place on June 4, 2011 in Russia. The schedule for the remaining group B games is unchanged.

Judo: Armenia’s Hovhannes Davtyan (w.c 60kg) and Armen Nazaryan (w.c 66kg) finished 5th and 7th respectively at the 2010 European Judo Championships in Vienna, Austria.

Sambo: on April 16, Armenian sambo wrestler Mher Karapetyan (w.c 75 kg) won a silver medal at the European Youth Sambo Championship going on in Thessaloniki, Greece. David Grigoryan (w.c. 82 kg) won championship bronze.
