Boxing: WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1, 27 KOs) stepped up to bantamweight to take the vacant IBO bantamweight belt against Eric Barcelona (51-18-4, 19 KOs) on Thursday night at the Leagues Club in Parramatta, NSW, Australia. Darchinyan dropped Barcelona three times en route to a 120-103, 118-105 and 116-108 win. Barcelona was also deducted two points from low blows.

Smbat Margaryan, Vladik Karapetyan win European Youth Weightlifting Championships gold

Weightlifting: Armenia’s Smbat Margaryan, (weight class 56kg) won gold at the European Youth Weightlifting Championships, which kicked off in Valencia, Spain, on May 17. Margaryan lifted 240kg in snatch, clean and jerk combination. Another gold medal went to Vladik Karapetyan (weight class 62kg). Karapetyan lifted 253kg in the snatch, clean and jerk combination, taking the lead over the Azerbaijani and Turkish weightlifters – Firudin Guliyev and Emre Buyukunlu.

FC Pyunik win Armenian Cup

Football: FC Pyunik scored a 4:0 victory over FC Banants in the final match for the Armenian Cup on May 10. After the match, Banants coach Stevica Kuzmanoski apologized to his club’s fans, saying: “We didn’t succeed today. The defense was too week and we failed the game.” Vardan Minasyan, Pyunik coach said, for his part, that it was not an easy match. “Although we were leading, we were tensed. Anyway, we showed a good game and I congratulate our players and fans,” he said.

Darchinyan-Donaire rematch negotiations collapse

Boxing: Elias Nassar, manager of WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan stated that negotiations for rematch with Nonito Donaire have collapsed. Nassar said the Donaire camp have failed to sign the contract after six weeks and they are now back to square one. Vic Darchinyan also stated he is disappointed in Nonito Donaire’s failure to sign the contract. “We signed the deal two days into talks,” said Nassar. “We were there waiting for Donaire to make up his mind on what he wanted to do. It’s easy to point the finger at who didn’t want the fight. It’s the party who doesn’t sign a contract.”

Hockey: Armenian hockey players win silver at Division III World Championship which took place in Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex from April 14 to 18. In the first round, Mongolia vs. North Korea match ended 22:1. Armenia beat the South African Republic 9: 2, wining all three periods. On April 15, Armenian ice-hockey players beat North Korea 7:6. South African Republic vs. Monglolia match ended 12:1. Ending the final match vs. North Korea 2:5, Armenian hockey players won the Championship silver. South African Republic won bronze, defeating Mongolia.

Weightlifting: Armenia came forth at the European Weightlifting Championships, winning 19 medals – 7 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze. Tigran Martirosyan (w.c. up to 77kg) and Gevork Poghosyan (w.c. 85 kg) won gold; Smbat Margaryan (w.c. 56 kg), Ara Khachatryan (w.c. 85 kg), Ruben Aleksanyan (w.c +105 kg) and Meline Daluzyan, (w.c. 69kg) won silver; Hripsime Khurshudyan (w.c. 75 kg) won bronze.

Weightlifting: Armenia’s Smbat Margaryan, 17, (w/c 56kg) won the jerk gold at the European Weightlifting Championships going on in Minsk, Belarus. In snatch, clean and jerk combination, Margaryan won the silver medal, lifting 225 kg. The champion’s title went to Belarus’ Vitaly Derbenev. Arsen Tarmazyan, representing Russia, came 9th. On April 8, World Weightlifting Championships silver winner and Olympic Games bronze winner Tigran Martirosyan (w/c 77kg) entered the filed.

Arthur Abraham still leading Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament

Boxing: The duel between Arthur Abraham (Germany) and Andre Dirrell (USA) ended in the second round of Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament. In the seventh round Dirrell managed to make several blows, one of them resulted in Abraham’ opened cut over his right eye. Realizing that he is losing on points, Abraham sent Dirrell down in the tenth round, but the judge considered knockdown an accidental fall. Dirrell slipped when he was hit by a glancing blow to the chin in the corner. Abraham hit him across the chin with a right hand and Dirrell couldn't continue. Referee Andy Cole disqualified Abraham for causing forbidden blow and a victory in battle went to Dirrell.

Wrestling: Armenian national Greco-Roman wrestling team coach Levon Julfalakyan informed PanARMENIAN.Net of the RA National Olympic Committee’s decision not to send wrestlers to European Championship to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. “Thus, our sportsmen will have enough time to train for the World Championships Moscow will host September 6 to 12,” he said.
